Happy 90th, Theatre-By-the-Sea!
90 years ago today (August 7, 1933), a charming if unremarkable summer stock theatre opened its doors right next to the beach in Matunuck, Rhode Island. In and of itself, I don’t know that I’ve ever have marked the date, there being probably hundreds of similar little small town resort theatres around the country — BUT for the fact that it’s located in my hometown and I worked there one summer…

Lula brings spotlight onto Gaza crisis during Celac speech
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Friday brought before the United Nations a proposal from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) to end “the genocide” in the Gaza Strip. During his speech at the 8th Celac Summit in Kingstown (St Vincent and the Grenadines), the South American leader also referred to the situation in the Middle East as a “carnage.”
“The humanitarian tragedy in Gaza requires from all of us the ability to say enough is enough to the collective punishment that the Israeli government is imposing on the Palestinian people. People are dying in the queue for food. The indifference of the international community is shocking. I want to take advantage of the presence of the UN Secretary-General, my comrade António Guterres, to propose a motion from Celac for an immediate end to this genocide,” said Lula.
Lula suggested Guterres invoke Article 99 of the UN Charter, which gives him the power to draw the attention of the UN Security Council to any matter that could threaten international peace and security. The President also called on China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, to put aside their differences and “put an end to this killing spree.”
The South American leader also urged Japan, who took over the rotating presidency of the Security Council on Friday, to “take up the issue urgently” and put an end to the “carnage” taking place in the Middle East. “There have already been more than 30,000 deaths. The lives of thousands of innocent women and children are at stake. The lives of Hamas hostages are also at stake. I want to end by telling you that our dignity and humanity are at stake. That's why we need to stop the carnage in the name of the survival of humanity, which needs a lot of humanism.”

Composition wise, the Seventh Rhode Island differed from the other units Rhode Island sent to the Rebellion.
It was composed largely of men from southern and western Rhode Island, most of whom were farmers and mill workers, whose average age was 21.
Company G of the Seventh was recruited in South Kingstown.
Tragically one in three Company G men died serving in the war, an absolutely horrible record.
One of them was this man, Charles W. Gardiner. He was nineteen and a farmer from South Kingstown when he joined up on August 20, 1862.
Like so many members of the Seventh he got sick in Mississippi, and died of typhoid on August 24, 1863 at Cincinnati. Fortunately his remains were brought home and buried in the Usquepaugh Cemetery.
His epitaph includes this poem:
Time hath not the power to bear away, Thine image from the heart; No scenes that mark life's onward way, Can bid it hence depart. Yet while our souls with anguish ridden, Mourn dearest one for thee, We raise our tearful eyes to heaven, When our dark path appears. Tis sweet to know, thou canst not share, Our anguish and our tears, For thou has gained a brighter land, And death's cold stream is past.

The Farmer's Daughter in South County, Rhode Island
Here's some of the cute little "stores" and displays at this South Kingstown perfect fall destination. It is Autumn in New England, for sure!
The Witch's House with "notions, potions, devotions, herbarium, apothescary." It was a little creepy but also cute and kitschy. That green figure in the little garden was sufficient scary.
And the other little rooms of things for sale, especially the Halloween room, was really fun to look around.
I loved, of course, the growing flowers. Those will be in my next post. 🙂

A Glimpse into the Whimsical World of Local Artist David Bird
In one photograph, the woodland creature Ryder dances joyfully under a flower. In another, Go Go hitches a ride on a mouse. A third depicts Silas splashing in a pool of water alongside a sparrow. The characters, called Becorns, are the creation of South Kingstown artist David Bird. He builds the figurines out of sticks, […]
